People in the southern state of Kerala are the heaviest drinkers in India, and sales of alcohol are rising fast. The BBC's Soutik Biswas examines why.
Kerala has the highest per capita consumption of alcohol in India
Jacob Varghese says he began drinking when he was nine years old, sipping on his father's unfinished whisky and brandy in glass tumblers.
It's a terrifying story of a descent into alcoholism for this 40-year-old health inspector.
At school, he consumed cheap local liquor. He lived in a haze of alcohol through his teens and dropped out of college.
He lost a job, cut his wrists twice trying to end his life, landed up in rehabilitation centres and at the age of 32, was reduced to begging on the streets to fund his alcohol habit.
'Lost respect'
"Drinking is a disease in Kerala," he says, his voice dropping to a whisper.
"I lost my kin, my respect and all my money chasing alcohol. Everyone encourages you to have it - your friends, the government."
This was before he was dragged to the local Alcoholics Anonymous chapter by friends. This, after 17 years of drinking had reduced him to a mental wreck and a pauper.

Zaid had recently admitted to having consumed alcohol in the past adding that he had already repented.
“I have admitted it. That’s the thing with me — I am a straightforward person. If I made a mistake, I will admit to it. I will apologise for it if I need to,” Zaid told the media yesterday in an attempt to end the character assassination by his former party colleagues. I am sure not all Malays are like the corrupted leaders of the country….It just fell to the wrong bunch of people unforutnately….
Just look at all the children of the politicians in the country….not alot of them were brought up the wrong way just like their parents….lousily educated with some degree & clenching their fists when making statements in the news……as if they’re still in the Tarzan era…..

UMNO have no problems with such business forays but since Umno makes so much noise about kilang arak in Selangor (which they approved) and arak being sold in 7-Eleven in Shah Alam, 0.01% or 15% of Mirzan’s business comprising alcoholic beverage production makes no difference as both are still haram. Also, Mahathir in his Bukit Gantang speech accused PR of memfitnah his son as having a stake in the arak business. Now his son admits it. So it is not a fitnah after all., Mahathir’s son, but the fact remains that you are willingly involved in a BREWERY company. You really don’t know what that means and what San Miguel is, or you just don’t care?
So how come DS Najib insists UMNO is Islamic? Anak Borek, Bapa rintek.
This is how low they would go...
The Barisan Nasional, especially UMNO is devoid of any usable issue in the Hulu Selangor I suppose. It is also absolutely corrupt of any idea on how to win the heart and mind of the voters.
And so they resorted to character assassination from the word go. That, I suppose, has been their trademark. And we all have come to expect it from them.
How sad. On one hand we want to be a high-income country by whatever year. We want to be a world class country with world class infrastructure blah blah blah. But deep down inside, we are just a bunch of useless, vile, vicious and selfish animals, waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting and helpless.
That is what we are.
And so Zaid Ibrahim used to drink. So what? He had said he had repented. At least, he is a Muslim who had even performed the Haj. The BN candidate is not even a Muslim! (I am not being a race or religious-centric here. I am just continuing with the same rationale and theme as theirs).
You want to talk about moral? Hahahahah...excuse me. What about detaining people without trial? What about having sex with under-age girl? What about corruption in PKFZ? What about building a huge mansion from money which apparently came down from the sky?
What about corruption? About sanctioning the torture and death of arrested persons? About paying "commissions" for national purchases? About abuse of power? About pinching a woman's ass? About using the religion for political mileage? About money politics?
Hell, what about being video taped while having sex with a personal friend and later becoming the President of a major component party of the Barisan Nasional?
No. All those are a-okay. But drinking alcohol? Cannot. Only some people can hold shares in a beer company. That's a-okay.
As if that is not enough, just visit this site and look at the picture of Zaid with apparently a bottle of Jack Daniels.
And look at the original picture as compared to the picture appearing on that site. It is sinful!
How low can one be?
