Dr Mahathir is not one to follow convention. He is one who breaks from tradition.

Would Najib dare offer the new Umno Youth Leader, Khairy Jamaluddin, a Cabinet post? Or would the Cabinet post go to Mukhriz Mahathir instead? By convention, Khairy, the winner, should get that post instead of Mukhriz, the loser. But Tun Dr Mahathir is not one to follow convention. He is one who breaks from tradition.

“As Umno Youth head, I am ready to assist the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib), whether within or outside the Government, and I feel the post is not important,” he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam at Seri Bendahara here.

The exclusion of the Umno Youth head from the Cabinet is nothing new because Suhaimi Kamaruddin (1978-1982) and Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (1996-1998) were among the movement’s heads who were not appointed ministers previously.

Khairy said he was confident that the new line-up would function well in assisting the prime minister in making changes through his “1Malaysia, People First, Performance Now!” agenda.

Khairy also mentioned in his website www.Rembau.net, that he was called in by Najib on Wednesday and told that he was to focus on strengthening Umno Youth.
“Based on the dip in the young voters’ support for Umno, we both agreed that the responsibilities and ground work to win them over is a huge responsibility and a full-time commitment. This demands cohesive energy and dedication, that cant be compromised with any responsibilities in the government administration,” he said, thanking Najib on the trust given, promising undivided support to his leadership.

“I also promise to work hard to empower and strengthen Umno Youth. To Youth members, accept this announcement with an open heart and brave challenges that come our way in winning over the people’s support,” Khairy said.

Dr M denies deal with Najib

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday denied making any deals with Datuk Seri Najib Razak to appoint his son Datuk Mukhriz as a minister. Dr Mahathir said it was entirely up to the prime minister to name his cabinet.
