Dr Mahathir has not realised that his influence has waned over the years, not because of Opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, who prefers to forgive him for the wrongs done to him, but because of his "self-destruct" mode.

A good indication is clear that Mahathir had in fact lost his own support from the people is when he himself went to the ground to support Perkasa president, Ibrahim Ali who contested on a Barisan Nasional / UMNO seat. PAS won the seat.

Another of his supporter, Zulkifli Noordin also lost in the Shah Alam constituency despite being "endorsed" by Mahathir.

Mahathir, as an octogenerian, should continue to live like most other statesmen would do. If he continues to be the 'rascal' that he was during the days of the late Tunku Abdul Rahman, he will end up being maligned by many Malaysians.

Tunku had once said that if Mahathir was allowed to join UMNO, he would destroy the good culture of UMNO. Is this not prophetic in a way, as many of us have also lost our respect for the organisation that Mahathir had established in 1987, shortly after the old UMNO was disbanded.

So, I hope Mahathir will keep to the status quo and allow Najib to do his job. Let the prime minister do his job. It is enough that Malaysians keep check on his excesses, but as a former prime minister, Mahathir should learn to keep quiet.

Umno leaders had also responded to Dr Mahathir's criticism although in a diplomatic manner as they were mindful of how his attacks on Abdullah led to the latter's resignation in 2009.
