PAS must immediately clarify if its Selangor assemblymen will side with Umno representatives in supporting embattled Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim who is clinging on as mentri besar, with ally DAP saying that a refusal to do so signified an end to the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) pact.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said that PAS’s reluctance to state the affiliation of its state assemblymen is the last lifeline of the Selangor mentri besar, who has been publicly rejected by lawmakers from both PKR and DAP.
Lim said that clarity on PAS’s stand in the matter was now imperative as the implication of Khalid’s claims that he still commands the majority of the state assembly was premised on a co-operation between the Islamist party and rival Umno.
“If PAS refuses to endorse a change of the Selangor Mentri Besar, by replacing Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim with PKR’s choice of PKR President Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, this will immediately lead to a break-up and end of PR both in Selangor and nationally,” Lim said in a statement today.
The demand is the most direct issued to PAS since the start of the crisis, after the Islamist party broke away from a purported agreement with PKR and DAP to replace Khalid with Dr Wan Azizah.
PAS was due to meet and deliberate on its support for Khalid on August 10, but has now postponed this twice, first to August 13 and again to August 17.
PKR has since sacked Khalid for insubordination following his refusal to yield to the party’s decision to nominate its president as his successor.
Yesterday, Khalid told reporters that the Selangor Sultan has consented to him remaining as mentri besar, after the convinced the ruler that he still commanded the confidence of the majority of the state assemblymen.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday said that all 12 Barisan Nasional assemblymen will unconditionally support Khalid to remain as mentri besar.
Today, Lim said the new development meant that further dallying by PAS would be a neglect of public trust.
“Failure by PAS to provide clarity will only further erode PR popular support and damage voters’ confidence not only in Selangor but also nationally,” he added.
Khalid’s position was thrown into question after PKR’s disciplinary committee expelled him on Saturday ostensibly for his open defiance of the party’s decision that he must step down to make way for PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Khalid’s sacking leaves the coalition in a precarious state and will add to worries that snap polls may have to be called to ward off a stalemate.
Without Khalid, PKR’s share of the 56-seat Selangor state assembly drops to 13 from 14 while allies DAP and PAS have 15 seats each. Umno, the opposition in the state, holds 12.

The four Selangor PAS executive councillors will have to attend today’s executive council meeting to ensure the state government remains in power - The Selangor Sultan has consented to the sacking of three DAP and two PKR excos, a palace source confirmed today.
These include DAP leaders Datuk Teng Chang Khim, Ean Yong Hian Wah and V. Ganabatirau as well as PKR leaders Elizabeth Wong Keat Peng and Dr Daroyah Alwi.
Upon receiving Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's consent, the Menteri Besar's office had issued sacking letters to the excos concerned.
Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim's press secretary Arfaeza Aziz confirmed that the sacking letters had been delivered to the offices of the three DAP and two PKR excos.
When contacted, Ganabatirau said he was in Perak and had not seen any such letter yet while Yong confirmed he had received the letter.
Attempts from the New Straits Times to get confirmation from the other four excos went unanswered. -NST

If PAS leaves the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, it may take another three decades for it to regain the position it is in now, warns its vice-president Husam Musa.
– All 15 PAS representatives in Selangor are bound to support Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as the state Mentri Besar, says Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah.
He said the support was mandatory and in accordance with the decision made by the PAS Syura Council to back Khalid as the Selangor Mentri Besar until his term ends.

“The Syura Council is the highest decision-making body of the party, therefore all PAS leaders and assemblymen must abide by the decision and that they must support Khalid until the council reverses the decision.
“The order was also given to PAS state executive councillors within Khalid’s cabinet,” he told reporters at his office here on Tuesday.
Mohd Amar added that as long as DAP executive councilors had not resigned, it showed that they too supported Khalid as the top executive of the state although in principle, DAP was with PKR to oust Khalid.
“Technically, Khalid has the mandate of the majority of the assemblymen within the Selangor to continue as mentri besar,” he said.
He added that the crisis in Selangor is unique as Khalid was the first party-less mentri besar in the history of Selangor politics.
PAS systems of running a government. To grapple with the tenets of democracy, in a land suddenly turned communal on a religion-based partition, the very ingredients of constitutional guarantees, actually were skewed conveniently to energize the electoral system. An oriental, segmented society was rightfully equalized by affirmative action, but electoral sentiments were overdone at the expense of merit, which is not the same as freedom of opportunity. That freedom should normally not be at the cost of merit. On the same weaknesses, the leftovers of communal thought were to be nurtured as a convenient trunk full of votes. The disadvantages worked both ways. The leaders chose and played with the electorate to their convenience. The electorate, in turn, installed half-baked leaders as per the divisions from which it voted. Indian politics, slowly began to succumb to this vicious circle to lower and lower ebbs
The Royals across the country love to say how they have the interests of the rakyat at heart and all that other mushy stuff. If this is a fact and not some self-serving statement, then the Sultan of Selangor should postpone his trip overseas and ensure that the Selangor crisis is resolved according to the Law and in a transparent fashion

what will happen to the dream of new politics if Pakatan were to split and cease to exist from the country’s political arena - the party to break ranks and take a stand against Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
The federal opposition coalition is still the best platform to promote and fight for mature politics, said a PAS lawmaker.
Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa (pic) said the country needs mature politics in its journey towards change as part of a new breed of politics.
The Selangor MB crisis came to a head when PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang threw his support behind Khalid. Hadi's stand was supported by the Islamist party's influential spiritual leader, Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat and the its ulama wing.
Talks of an imminent split in Pakatan gained ground when the screenshot of a leaked Whatsapp conversation went viral last week, showing PAS member Dr Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki's analysis of a scenario where PAS teams up with rival Umno to form a simple majority government and at the same time, retain Khalid as MB.

A Selangor PAS elected representative tonight became the first of the 15 in the party to break ranks and take a stand against Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
Hulu Kelang assemblyperson Saari Sungib, however, stressed that the stand he is taking is to “side with Pakatan Rakyat”.

Why strong states develop in some societies and not in others is a complex historical question. One argument is that a strong state can only be built on a firm foundation of nationhood.Malaysia’s independence, two aspects of the country’s political evolution are noteworthy. The first is the institutionalization of the periodic transfer of power, peacefully and predictably, recently evident in PAKATAN ’s victory. But the journey has been much rockier with regard to another critical question: how to direct that power for the broader public good. While popular commentary on political power focuses on its misuse for private gain or corruption, there has been less attention on the limited ability of political power to translate intentions into outcomes.

Games politicians play our sultan would look very foolish if suddenly PAS withdraws their support for Khalid.
Coming against the backdrop of the crisis in Selangor ,After all, if each pillar of our Constitution did what it was charged to do by the Constitution, the country would be in a much better shape, right? After all, extraordinary times – and these are extraordinary times, make no mistake about it – call for extraordinary interventions, S'gor ruler didn't end MB debacle the head of state is playing politics!! Rather than show he's above politics he has shown clearly by his actions
.This concerns the matter of alliances and coalitions in our polity, which is growing into the mother of all that is wrong with our politics today.
Despite the PAS and UMNO have different DNA UMNO is accused of fuelling sectarianism through targeting of minority For months PAS and UMNO have been locked in intense politicking over hudud and the alienation of the Iraqi Sunni population in Malaysia
