DAP is not surprised at UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s reversal of his previous stand against Perkasa by denying that he had said his Barisan Nasional (BN) colleagues agreed to keep the ruling coalition from Perkasa. After all Tengku Adnan had no choice but to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s statement yesterday that Umno did not want to stir conflict with any non-governmental organisation (NGO) such as Perkasa.

This only proves UMNO has all along being behind Perkasa. UMNO’s submission to Perkasa and Utusan Malaysia open support shows the strength of the Perkasa mentality within BN and that 1Malaysia is an empty slogan to win votes. What is surprising however is that this support and the Perkasa mentality is prevalent even amongst all component parties of BN as explained by Tengku Adnan in The Malaysian Insider on Perkasa, “When we had a meeting with BN secretaries-general, we never talked even a little bit that we wanted to distance ourselves from anybody.”

Clearly all the BN component parties like MCA are just playing a big “sandiwara” opposing Perkasa outside when inside meetings, they keep silent and submissively support UMNO’s pro-Perkasa position. This Perkasa mentality in BN is dangerous as it has led to public and open denigration of Malaysians from minority groups.

This Perkasa mentality has resulted in those making racist remarks escape unpunished. When Najib’s special officer Nasir Safar said that Indians were beggars and Chinese women sell their bodies, Nasir was not punished for such seditious remarks and only resigned. When the school principals abused their position to make racist remarks against Indians and Chinese, no action was taken.

No action was taken agains the Kulai school principal who said during the school assembly that Indians were like dogs and Chinese students can go back to China. Similarly no action was taken against the Kedah school principal for making similar racist statements against Chinese students. Another teacher in a Bukit Jambul school in Penang was only given a memo when he used foul language against students.

How can you reward good if you do not punish bad? Is the reason why no action has been taken against these racist and extremist statements because of Perkasa’s open support and demonstrations of the right of Nasir and the school principals to make such racist and extremist statements.

Many Malaysians know that Perkasa is racist and extremist when they do not condemn but openly support the school principals and Nasir for calling Indians beggars and dogs, Chinese women sell their bodies and to go back to China. More serious is that UMNO and BN continues to support Perkasa despite such racist and extremist positions taken by Perkasa.

Malaysians must stand up and unite against the racism and extremism as embodied not only by Perkasa but those that support Perkasa such as UMNO and BN. BN may feel that this is just a political game to win votes and the next general elections. However the consequences are dire if not nipped in the bud. There is but only one short step from dehumanizing Malaysians by describing them as beggars, selling their bodies and even dogs to the final militant step practiced by those who preach the language of violence.

Najib's 1Malaysia has fizzled out
Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

Not only has Prime Minister Najib Razak made a complete U-turn from an earlier attempt to distance his Umno party from ultra-Malay rights group Perkasa, his trusted lieutenants now even say Najib’s prized 1Malaysia plan is not about racial equality.

The latest comments from Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan were immediately denounced by Pakatan Rakyat leaders.

“This must surely be the biggest joke. Najib. Tengku Adnan and Nazri Aziz are now the 3 Malay stooges while MCA, MIC and Gerakan are the 3 non-Malay stooges. This is BN – forever racially divided and dominated by Umno to the extent that it can anytime slap Soi Lek, Tsu Koon and Samy in the face and yet the three will still bow and say 'thank you, one more time please',” PKR strategic director Tian Chua toldMalaysia Chronicle.

He was referring to MCA president Chua Soi Lek, Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koon and MIC chief S Samy Vellu.

Explain 1Malaysia, demands Perkasa

Najib’s furious backpedalling follows a demand from Perkasa to explain what 1Malaysia was or face losing Malay support for Umno and BN in the coming general election.

Mahathir and Ibrahim Ali
“Perkasa is very worried that if there are not enough efforts to explain the 1 Malaysia concept, it will cause certain communities to reject Umno and BN. Perkasa has feedback from the Malay grassroots that this concept is still confusing,” Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali was reported as saying.

“Among some non-Muslim communities, Perkasa finds that they believe the 1 Malaysia policy is an effort to equalise all races in terms of sharing the nation’s wealth and no race is given special treatment. All races are considered the same.”

Indeed, the brouhaha over Perkasa intensified when a day after Malaysia Day, Najib moved to deny that Umno was cutting its ties to Perkasa. His excuse – which is now being seized on by Umno leaders to help him save face – is that Perkasa is an NGO and not a political party.

“Nazri should accept that Perkasa is just an NGO. The Malays know how to differentiate between political parties and NGO,” wrote the Awang Selamat editorial entitled Alahai Nazri in the Umno-own Minnguan Malaysia, the Sunday edition of Utusan.

“Awang is not surprised the Chinese press have gone all out to condemn Dr Mahathir. This is because the Malay leaders themselves paved the way for them to do so.”

1Malaysia not about racial equality, answers Umno

Minister in the PM's Department Nazri Aziz had backed Tengku Adnan, who publicly rejected Perkasa and its president Ibrahim Ali just days before Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Nazri had also attacked Utusan for refusing to support Najib’s 1Malaysia and instead siding with Mahathir’s Perkasa.

Tengku Adnan
Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan has denied he had said Umno would cut ties with Perkasa.

“I didn’t even ask members of Umno to relinquish their relationship with Perkasa. It was totally blown out of proportion by Ibrahim Ali,” The Malaysian Insider reported Tengku Adnan as saying on Sunday.

“When we had a meeting with BN secretaries-general, we never talked even a little bit that we wanted to distance ourselves from anybody. Our policy is to be close with everybody. We should even go and approach opposition members and explain what our policies are because they are misguided.”

Tengku Adnan also said that the 1 Malaysia policy was not about racial equality per se but about the welfare of poor people across the racial groups that had to be taken into account.

“1 Malaysia is not about equality. You need to look at the poor Malays, poor Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Ibans and Muruts. How do we help them? How do we ensure they can earn a living in the country? That is what 1 Malaysia is all about,” fudged Tengku Adnan.

Sandiwara to deflect attention on corruption revelations

Najib, Dr M, Pak Lah - the Umno elite
Pakatan Rakyat leaders have from day one warned that Umno was staging a drama or “sandiwara” to deflect public attention from a string of billion-ringgit corruption cases involving Najib, Mahathir and another former premier Abdullah Badawi.

They pointed out that Umno leaders have themselves acknowledged that the Malay vote was matured and would not swing much and that being attached to Perkasa only robbed the BN of the non-Malay vote.

"Najib's numbness to how his 1Malaysia is being made a mockery of by a mere NGO is sufficient proof of what a puppet he is. Malaysians should not feel any sympathy for him. He has wasted our time and should never have been allowed to become PM because of his personal baggage. It is obvious his attention is not on the country but on what he can get out of it for himself and his cronies," Bukit Gantang MP Nizar Jamaluddin toldMalaysia Chronicle.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s refusal to alienate Perkasa reflects his fears of Umno being rejected by Malay voters and potential in-fighting within his party, say his political foes and analysts.

The prime minister quelled fears of a showdown with Perkasa on Friday when he said the country’s largest Malay party was not in conflict with any non-governmental organisation despite the recent move by Umno leaders to distance the party from the Malay rights group.

“Umno members who are also Perkasa members may retaliate against Umno, so there is a negative impact on Umno,” PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali told The Malaysian Insider, referring to the decision by Umno leaders to reject Perkasa.

“So, Najib made the statement to redress the statement made earlier on by the Umno secretary-general. It is some form of damage control by Najib,” said Mustafa.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had earlier told his Barisan Nasional (BN) allies that Umno would not back Perkasa or its president Datuk Ibrahim Ali in the next general election as such a move would erode non-Malay support for the ruling coalition.

Ibrahim then warned Umno not to be complacent about its vote bank and threatened to give “guidance” to Perkasa’s 300,000 members — 80 per cent of whom are alleged to be disillusioned Umno members — on how to vote in the next general election.

Tengku Adnan, who is also the BN secretary-general, has now said his statement did not repudiate Perkasa but was just an acknowledgment the Malay rights movement was eroding the coalition’s non-Malay support.

Political analyst James Chin said that Najib could not afford to make a public stand against Perkasa as doing so would cause Malay voters to reject the party.

“He (Najib) cannot do that because if he does that, it will alienate the Malay ground,” said Chin.

The political scientist from the University of Monash dismissed Najib as being just like his predecessor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for attempting to please everyone.

“He is just like Pak Lah by trying to be nice to everyone under the sun. Whatever he does, he is preparing for the next general election,” said Chin, referring to the former premier’s moniker.

DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang also mocked Najib as “Mr. Flip Flop” for his refusal to snub Perkasa despite his party leaders’ decision to do so.

“Is he a new Mr Flip Flop from one position to another? It is a question of whether he has the political will to make a stand,” said the Ipoh Timur MP.

Political analyst Dr Lim Teck Ghee pointed out that Najib’s refusal to castigate Perkasa’s strident views on Malay rights – which have been at odds with his agenda of economic reform — indicated indecisive leadership.

“It certainly gives the impression that the PM is either running scared of Perkasa — hence, the refusal to condemn it — or is using Perkasa’s extreme positions as a political bargaining chip. Both ways, it is indicative of poor and indecisive leadership,” said Lim.

DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua also slammed the prime minister’s statement that Umno did not want to engage in conflict with NGOs as an “empty slogan” which was meant to appeal to different parties.

“The intent, just like his 1 Malaysia slogan, is to be all things to all people, which ends up just confusing everyone and becoming just an empty slogan in the end,” said Pua.

“If you are the concerned civil society, you’ll be happy that the prime minister is saying ‘something’ about Perkasa at last. If you are Perkasa, you’d think the prime minister is referring to the Chinese extremists in MCA, DAP and other education NGOs,” added the Petaling Jaya Utara MP.

Pua further chastised Najib and Umno for lacking the political courage to speak up against extremists who have deepened racial disunity and scared investors away.

“Najib and his Umno has no political courage to face up to the extremists who have been causing a great divide in the Malaysian society and scaring all the local and foreign investors away,” said Pua.

Perkasa has lobbied against attempts by the Najib administration to implement more inclusive economic reforms in a bid to increase the country’s competitiveness that has suffered because of affirmative action policies.

Malaysia dropped two spots in the World Economic Forum (WEF) competitiveness index at a ranking of 26 out of 132 countries, while foreign direct investment in the country plunged by 81 per cent last year.

Using the Malay rights platform, Perkasa has opposed any proposal to remove Bumiputera quotas and has even taken MCA leaders to task for making such proposals.

Political observer Azmi Sharom echoed Pua’s views and said that Najib’s refusal to condemn Perkasa indicated his lack of commitment towards his 1 Malaysia policy.

“Whatever the reason he (Najib) has for not coming out against Perkasa honestly and openly, what it shows is that Najib is not serious about 1 Malaysia. Najib has exposed himself as a person who does not have the full conviction to support his policies to the end,” said the law lecturer.

He pointed out that it was imperative for Najib to make a clear stand against Perkasa although the group had a right to voice their opinions.

“You can’t just come up with this wishy-washy thing and say that they’re an NGO. Sure they have a right to speak but you have to stand up against them,” said Azmi.

PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar believed that Najib’s reluctance to alienate Perkasa showed his fears of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s backing of the group, as well as fears of an internal revolt to replace him with his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“It shows that he’s very worried about Dr Mahathir’s involvement in Perkasa, and he’s also worried that there may be parties within Umno who would back Muhyiddin against Najib,” said Mahfuz.

Dr Mahathir, who is Perkasa’s patron, has warned Umno against snubbing Perkasa, claiming that the move would cost the party at the ballot box.
