Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim has appointed Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to chair a special government body to look after the state’s Felda set

Pakatan’s grand finale draws thousands

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim has appointed Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to chair a special government body to look after the state’s Felda settlers, underscoring the importance of the Malay vote in tomorrow’s Hulu Selangor by-election.

In what has become the most keenly-contested by-election since Election 2008, both Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and Barisan Nasional (BN) have pulled out all the stops in a vote which could define both coalitions’ fortunes in the next general election.

In a press statement issued tonight on the eve of tomorrow’s vote, Khalid said the special body was aimed at administrating the process of issuing land titles to Felda settlers in the state.

Malays account for 53 per cent of Hulu Selangor’s 64,500 voters and there are more than 7,000 mostly Malay Felda settlers in the constituency.

In the last two days, the BN campaign has concentrated its pork-barrel spending on this group of voters.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak raised the ante in the contest by dishing out RM50,000 in cash to 100 settlers and promised more money.

The Prime Minister, who has already called tomorrow’s vote a referendum on his administration, has hit the hustings continuously in recent days.

Even before Najib hit the campaign trail, PR has found it tough to penetrate Felda settlements, long considered BN strongholds.

But the PR campaign hoped to hit back with the announcement that Zaid, a former Umno Law Minister, could sort out their long standing grouses about land titles.

Khalid said tonight that Felda settlers were entitled to the land occupied by them because he claimed agreements signed with the federal agency had already expired.

The Selangor mentri besar also pointed out that payments made by settlers to the federal agency were not in line with the profits made by Felda Holdings Berhad, the corporatised investment holding company of the federal land development agency.

He also argued that the state government had never benefitted from handling over its land to the federal agency to be used as settlement land.

“Datuk Zaid Ibrahim was chosen because he is experienced in matters of the law and is able to offer advice on land ownership,” said Khalid.

Both BN and PR have traded forecasts of winning tomorrow’s vote while working the ground today for every vote.

Najib’s BN campaign and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s PR team are separately holding mass rallies tonight in the constituency the size of Malacca in last-ditch efforts to sway voters.

A victory for either coalition could provide the impetus needed to clinch victory in the next general election.

But many observers expect a BN victory tomorrow because of the coalition’s massive spending and its slick campaign machinery.

BN must win big to justify Najib’s personal involvement in the campaign.

In an unprecedented move, the prime minister himself has led the campaign to ensure MIC information chief, P. Kamalanathan, defeats PKR’s Zaid.

BN lost the seat for the first time in its electoral history by a razor-thin 198 votes in Election 2008, which saw the ruling federal coalition humbled in four states and 81 other federal seats.

BN has consistently won the seat with at least a 8,500 votes majority since 1990, when Datuk G. Palanivel began the first of his four terms in the constituency.

For the current campaign, BN has given close to RM60 million in a combination of projects and cash awards to win over the majority of the 64,500 voters in the traditionally pro-BN constituency, which comprises three state seats won by BN in Election 2008.

FULL REPORT KUALA KUBU BARU: Pakatan Rakyat’s “grand finale” ceramah at the Kuala Kubu Baru stadium tonight drew close to 15,000 people.
The overflowing crowd at the “mini” stadium is said to have caused concern in the Barisan Nasional camp but some claim that the fears are baseless because most them were outsiders.
Hundreds also made a beeline outside the stadium, hoping to catch a glimpse of the opposition stalwarts.
When PKR candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election Zaid Ibrahim arrived, he was greeted with rapturous cheer and chants of “Reformasi” and “Undi Zaid Ibrahim”.
The crowd also went wild when PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat made an appearance.
PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim, who was caught in a traffic snarl, caused a stir when he arrived riding pillion on a motorcyle.
This was the opposition coalition’s final assault, with campaigning drawing to an end at the stroke of midnight.
When a police helicopter hovered above the stadium, DAP supremo Karpal Singh had the crowd in stitches when he quipped, “Rosmah is inside (the helicopter).”
Rosmah Mansor is the wife of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the people needed a representative who would hear their voices, work with them and give them hope.
“If (Barisan Nasional candidate P) Kamalanathan is elected into Parliament, he would not have the guts to stand up against Najib,” he added.
Anwar: Umno is out tomorrow
Meanwhile, Zaid told the crowd that Najib has described the by-election as a referendum on his leadership.
“So if BN loses, Najib please step down. In the Westminster system, if the premier steps down, the deputy should step down as well,” he said.
Zaid also quoted Najib as saying that BN must win this contest at all costs while his “guru besar” Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that there is no halal or haram in politics.
“We will face this ‘ajaran sesat’ (deviant teaching) tomorrow. But this is not only about my future, but the future of the nation as well,” he said.
When Anwar took to the microphone, the crowd broke into thunderous applause.
“This is not about money or promises. It is about fighting for your dignity,” he said to loud cheers.
“Umno mistreats you, then offers you money whenever an election comes around and you forget what they have done to you in the past. But Umno is out tomorrow,” he added.
The massive ceramah brought traffic to a standstill in Kuala Kubu Baru, whose streets are usually deserted at this hour.

An eight-day campaign that saw lavish pork barrel spending and blistering personal attacks will probably see Datuk Zaid Ibrahim retaining Hulu Selangor for Pakatan Rakyat (PR), a straw poll indicated tonight.

The Malaysian Insider straw poll showed that Zaid has 49 per cent support while Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate P. Kamalanathan is behind with 40 per cent in the constituency that has 64,500 voters in three state seats.

Another 11 per cent were undecided in the straw poll that asked who would they vote in tomorrow’s polling.

In the Batang Kali state seat which is nearest to Kuala Lumpur, PR’s Zaid won the support of 70 per cent polled by The Malaysian Insider while Kamalanathan picked up 30 per cent.

Zaid also led in the Kuala Kubu Baru state seat with 45 per cent support against Kamalanathan’s 30 per cent while 25 per cent were undecided.

But in Ulu Bernam, those polled picked Kamalanathan who received 55 per cent support against Zaid’s 35 per cent, leaving 10 per cent undecided.

The Malaysian Insider also found Zaid was liked by more Malays (23 per cent), Chinese (14 per cent) and Indians (12 per cent).

Kamalanathan won over more Malays (27 per cent) followed by Indians (8 per cent) and Chinese (5 per cent).

The straw poll was conducted today when top leaders from BN and PR including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, PR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat campaigned extensively from morning to night.

Some 85 per cent of those polled had also voted previously in Election 2008 where PKR candidate Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad won narrowly with 198 votes majority.

All those polled said they will vote tomorrow although the Election Comission predicts turnout at 80 per cent in Selangor’s first by-election since the 2008 polls.

The Malaysian Insider conducted the straw poll amid predictions by both sides that they will win the seat with BN getting 52 per cent of the vote while others forecast PR will retain it with 53 per cent of votes cast.

One of those polled in Batang Kali, Rosli Nawawi said the candidate’s race was a major consideration. “I don’t mind choosing anyone as long as he’s a Malay,” the 58-year-old explained.

“So I will vote for PKR because he is a Malay and also has the potential to be a great MP,” he added.

Shamsuddin Salleh said he would pick Kamalanathan as he appeared to have the potential and spirit for the job.

“He is also highly-educated and can speak Malay well. Its not wrong to give him a chance to bring change to Hulu Selangor,” said the 70-year-old.

Selvan Nagapan, 35, from Batang Kali said, “of course I will support PKR as it has helped voters here.”

“Although it has just been two years in Selangor, they have proved they can serve the people,” he added.

The DVDs are believed to be closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings in a hotel suite. However, the hotel’s location and the date of the recording are not known.

The first DVD lasting 56 minutes has footage of four different camera angles of the hotel suite – the bed, living area, entrance to the bathroom and the main door. It purportedly shows Dr Chua Soi Lek and woman entering the room separately.

The second DVD lasting 44 minutes is said to show the couple engaged in sex acts on the bed.
