FLASBACK,FLASBACK
The rumors have been swirling around since the ISA arrests last Friday that Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim will leave the cabinet has materialized today.
Reliable sources we spoke to told us that Zaid Ibrahim will call a press conference tomorrow to announce joining Pakatan Rakyat.
A greater shock may be in store for embattled PM Badawi. The 4th most senior leader in UMNO, Vice President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will lead a group of Johor UMNO MPs to join Pakatan thereby giving Anwar a comfortable malay muslim majority in the new parliament.
Far-fetched it may sound, it may not appear totally impossible after all given Muhyiddin’s recent call for Badawi to reconsider the transition plan which had led to some UMNO leaders asking him to resign from cabinet. (Read Malaysiakini’s report here)
Touted by many as a possible deputy to either Najib or Razaleigh, will Muhyiddin take the biggest gamble in his political career by crossing over to Pakatan ?
For somebody who aspires to be a future PM, Muhyiddin’s options are becoming limited each day he remains in UMNO.
Najib has little trust in him and chances are he will select somebody else to be his deputy should the transition plan be followed till 2010.
Muhyiddin will have to throw his lot behind Razeleigh who only stands an outside chance of toppling Badawi even with the support of his ex-nemesis Dr Mahathir.
Even if Razaleigh somehow succeeds in becoming PM, he will most likely be a lameduck leader beholdened to the kingmaker, Dr Mahathir. Surely Muhyiddin does not want to be a deputy PM in name only.
Muhyiddin was part of the Yayasan team under Anwar when he won one of UMNO Vice-Presidency in the 1995 elections. In a way, he owed his meteoric rise to Anwar who plucked him out of obscurity.
After Anwar was sacked by Dr Mahathir from government in 1998, though Muhyiddin did not openly support Anwar, he did not attack him either like other UMNO leaders. This will not be lost on Anwar as he seeks a reliable partner in BN to lead the impending exodus.
Muhyiddin will be hailed as a hero and savior of the rakyat if he were to resign from BN now and joined Pakatan. Given the momentum now, his political stature and reputation will be greatly enhanced, thereby paving the way for him to become PM in the future.
Anwar will need Muhyiddin as his deputy to keep the fractious Pakatan government together. With his vast experience in government, Muhyiddin will be the most able leader Anwar can count on as he tries to lead Malaysia out of troubled waters.
Muhyiddin knows that his prospects will be much brighter with Anwar than with either Najib or Razaleigh. In fact, his move to get Dr Mahathir back into UMNO may just be a ploy to drive the nail finally into UMNO’s coffin.
UMNO’S GUSHING DRIVEL
by Terence Netto
The Ogre does what ogres can,
Deeds quite impossible for man,
But one prize is beyond his reach:
The Ogre cannot master speech.
About a subjugated plain,
Among it’s desperate and slain,
The Ogre stalks with hands on hips,
While drivel gushes from his lips.
- W H Auden
Something about the relative youth and the numbers of participants in the anti-ISA demonstration a week ago must have driven the ruling elite and its cohort over a threshold. For after that, drivel started gushing from its vents.
No less than that the Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin began by branding Anwar Ibrahim, putative leader of opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat, a traitor to the Malays.
![]() |
Muhyiddin (right) stuck to his guns when on pain of being sued for defamation by Anwar, not only declined to withdraw his invective but reasserted it and announced willingness to face the consequences.
Then an Utusan Malaysia columnist, Noor Azam, lambasted the Malays for being cowards in the face of what he claimed was growing non-Malay encroachment on supposedly impregnable Malay domains in politics and the civil service.
Not that these two instances of hysteria-stirring and intemperance were aberrant episodes; they have been part of a pattern that however marked a nadir of sorts in UMNO’s verbal and legal hostilities towards Pakatan Rakyat and the man, Anwar Ibrahim, mainly responsible in making it a threat to the UMNO-dominated Barisan Nasional’s now 52-year stay in power.
Muhyiddin’s verbal wars against Anwar
Before this, Anwar has been called a traitor to UMNO and the Malays by the party’s lesser lights. But it’s something else when somebody of Muhyiddin’s stature says it – especially someone who had explained in September 1998, that he had visited the just-sacked and about-to-be-disgraced Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO deputy president because he did not believe in being only a fair-weather friend of Anwar.
It was a nuanced defense of a humane action by somebody who was signaling that he was not of the herd mentality.
![]() |
Surely, that action had its negative payback for Muhyiddin: A few years down the road, a chance for him to become Deputy Prime Minister under Abdullah Badawi was snuffed out by the just-retired Dr Mahathir Mohamed who pushed for Najib in preference to Muhyiddin, suspected in Mahathir’s eyes of latent ties to Anwar.
That was then. Now, swept by the vortex of UMNO politics to its deputy presidency and within a heartbeat of the premiership, Muhyiddin’s descent in the verbal wars against Anwar (above) suggests that he cannot sustain the ‘I’m the same in fair or foul weather’ behaviour of a decade ago.
Muhyiddin’s stoop marks an ominous turn in the verbal wars against Anwar Ibrahim, just as columnist Noor Azam’s tirade against Malay apathy in the face of non-Malay infiltration of their allegedly sacrosanct Malay precincts suggests the UMNO cohort, these days, are leading lives of unquiet desperation.
Anti-ISA rally has UMNO under pressure
Prime Minister Najib Razak (below) must have expected that the slew of socio-economic measures he announced in recent months – all aimed at recovering waning support among non-Malay voters – would see UMNO-BN navigate out of the shoals that his ineffectual predecessor Abdullah Badawi had stumbled to.
![]() |
Heightened dissonance within the Pakatan ranks and a near-win by UMNO in the Manek Urai by-election last July 14 must have encouraged the UMNO cohort that the Najib’s socio-economic nostrums were working to appease the Malaysian body politic against too-radical a swing against UMNO-BN.
But an unexplained death in the afternoon at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency and a better-than-expected turnout of relatively young Malaysians at the Anti-ISA rally – the latter despite a hostile and forbiddingly heavy Police cordon – have ratcheted up the pressure on the UMNO cohort and driven it over a threshold.
The upshot: Invective – foulmouthed and facile – and red herrings are trained on Anwar Ibrahim for his success at conjuring a coalition not many, a year and a half ago, would have given a ghost of a chance at succeeding in ousting UMNO-BN from power.
Today, the UMNO cohort’s descent to drivel in the wars against their looming ouster reflects their desperation that the leader they allowed themselves to reject has become the cornerstone of a jelling replacement.

The Ganges is said to flow from heaven to earth through the matted locks of Lord Shiva in the Himalayas, and it has a deep religious significance for Hindus. There are countless temples dotted along the murky river, some of them sinking into its soft sand, and Indians climb over and jump off the ruins to wash alongside the dead at all times of the day. You quickly become used to the smell of roasting flesh, which closely resembles that of burning hair, and is in any case preferable to the acrid stench of the detritus in every alleyway.
The holy dip in river Ganges is some thing that no Hindu ever wants to miss. It is believed that after taking a bath in the Ganges one becomes sacred and innocent as a new-born child. But belief is just a belief. The Ganges is now so polluted that taking bath or even just a dip is quite dangerous.
This whole Mela seems like a big GERM! How can people even think about going into the Ganges River which is polluted with god knows what? And all those men flashing their private parts in public is so disgusting! What kind of celebration is this?
I have smelled the river before 70 million people have bathed in it; I have no desire to be anywhere near it afterwards.
Some 60 million Hindus are usually attend Kumbh Mela which is a Hindu pilgrimage that occurs four times every twelve years and rotates among four locations: Allahabad (Prayag), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Each twelve-year cycle includes one Maha Kumbh Mela (Great Kumbh Mela) at Prayag, which is attended by millions of people, making it the largest gathering anywhere in the world
There are a lot of activities:
1) Millions of Naked Sadus show up. Activities include religious discussions, devotional singing, mass feeding of holy men and women and the poor, and religious assemblies where doctrines are debated and standardized. Kumbh Mela (especially the Maha Kumbh Mela) is the most sacred of all the pilgrimages.
