Ahmad Maslan, the Umno information chief and deputy minister, came in for a tongue lashing for his gimmicky action in throwing a copy of the Pakatan Rakyat's economic blueprint, the Buku Jingga, into a rubbish bin placed specially beside him during a briefing.

"It shows how unnerved he is by the Buku Jingga. It also shows how afraid and concerned Umno is about the Felda Global Ventures listing, but in his childish action, he is only belittling the intelligence of the settlers and his own government," PKR communications director Nik Nazmi toldMalaysia Chronicle.

Felda listing to raise money for Umno, not to benefit the settlers

Ahmad was attending a function held in Kuala Lumpur attended by some 1,300 settlers from the Federal Land Authority's 317 resettlement schemes. The briefing is seen as a last ditch bid to convince the settlers not to object to the listing of Felda's investment unit on the Bursa Malaysia.

According to the listing plan, Felda is required to mortgage 360,000 hectares of lands under Felda Plantations to Felda Global Ventures Holding Sdn Bhd for 60 years, a that pressure groups such as the National Felda Settlers’ Children Association or ANAK, has warned would be disastrous for settlers.

Pakatan Rakyat leaders have minced no words accusing Prime Minister Najib Razak of using Felda to raise cash to fund Umno's election machinery in nationwide polls expected to be called this year.

“The goal is to increase UMNO’s political war chest to face the impending general election,” PAS vice president Husan Musa warned at a recent seminar.

Won't change the flaws in the listing plan

According to Husan, state land matters come under the purview of the Menteri Besar or chief minister of each state, and already Kelantan has announced it will not release any of the land for the listing.

The land approved by state in Felda areas are divided into two categories, one with settler’s ownership and the other developed by Felda Plantations, added the PAS leader, who is also a member of the Kelantan state Cabinet.

Husam said the Kelantan government was planning to takeover the land under Felda Plantations and bring in new settlers, a move that will bring greater and longer-lasting economic value to the Felda folk.

"Certainly, Ahmad and Umno are under pressure to rebut the challenges posed by Pakatan, so in their simplistic way, they dump the Buku Jingga into the bin. But it still doesn't hide the flaws in the listing plan," said Nik Nazmi.
